Local leaders question safety of Seabrook power plant Citing safety concerns, a growing chorus of local politicians is urging the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to halt the relicensing process for Seabrook Station until a long-term solution is implemented to address concrete degradation at the site. The NRC has concluded that the plant, which generates enough electricity to power more 1 million homes each year, remains safe.
School budget calls for $1m increase For the first time in three years, school officials have proposed a budget that does not call for layoffs. Superintendent Mark Conrad has suggested a budget of $95.6 million, an increase of $1 million over this year. The district has eliminated 80 jobs over the last three years while dealing with budget constraints. - Tom Long
Parking at beach will cost more The state Legislature has given the Division of Parks and Recreation permission to raise the rate at coin-operated parking meters at Hampton Beach from $1.50 to $2. The rate at park-and-pay meters also will increase, going from $1.75 to $2 per hour. The meters allow visitors to pay by cash or credit card at any of the beach’s pay stations. State parks also got the OK to expand the season when meters will be in effect by two months. They will now be operational from April through October, but the fee will be $1 per hour in April and October. - Tom Long
